McQUADE HOUSE
John McQuade, an immigrant to Pennsylvania from Ireland in 1871, was Mayor of Gilman in 1891. He spent the intervening years of his life mining gold, silver, and coal from Montana to the Caribou gold fields in British Columbia.
He came to Issaquah, still called Gilman at the time, as a miner and was one of the founders of the town while serving as constable. During his term as Mayor, Gilman was tax-free. After another stint in the gold fields in 1899 he returned to Gilman as marshal.
